Norwegian mathematician who collaborated with Felix Klein in the investigation of continuous groups, now known as Lie groups. He wrote a ponderous three volume treatise on transformation groups (1888-1893). He also discovered a contact transformation by which a sphere can be made to correspond to a straight line.
