Condillac, Étienne (1714-1780)
    

French philosopher who took an empiricist approach, believing that "the ways things are is the way they ought to be." He believed that anything that could not be shown to have physical reality did not exist. Furthermore, he said physical sensations would not be explained, only described. His views influenced Lavoisier.
