Bacon, Roger (1220-1292)

English scholar who, at one point, studied under Grosseteste at Oxford. He attempted to write a universal encyclopedia of knowledge. He is one of the first people (in the West) known to have mentioned gunpowder. Bacon appealed to Pope Clement to allow more experimentation in the educational system. He tried to construct a rainbow Eric Weisstein's World of Astronomy using glass beads in order to study it. This marked one of the earliest attempts to reproduce a natural phenomenon in the lab for closer scrutiny.
